10 Email Ideas for Small Businesses

Are you trying to plan your marketing content for the upcoming season and looking for new ideas for your newsletters? Can’t figure out what to write about for those days between sales and new releases? Emails for e-commerce and small businesses are easy and I’ve rounded up a few prompts to get you started. Besides, who doesn’t want a few extra emails in their back pocket.

Here’s a hint that I always use when I get an overwhelming blank spot in my head when creating email content. It happens to everyone, no big deal. Try picturing one person, your perfect customer, and choose one of the emails below to write to them about. Picturing one person helps you write and design in a way that is more personal and engaging. The subscriber feels like you are writing just to them and is more likely open and click that CTA.

Here are 10 simple email ideas that you can use today to engage and catch your subscribers attention:

  • Color: Pick a color that is a best seller or trending and make a collection of products that all share it.

  • Best Sellers: Choose your top 5 best sellers and highlight why customers love them. Bonus points for including real reviews.

  • Press Posts: Highlight any cool press your brand or founder has gotten recently. Cross post links to articles and on social (prepare to greet a larger audience when the magazine/show reposts it)

  • Meet the Team: Have your team pick their favorites. Be sure to mention what they do, ie Jenny in marketing loves X, Cassie in shipping is obsessed with Z, and include why they love this item.

  • Founders Favorite: Like meet the team but with an origin story, why is this the owner’s favorite, how was it created, etc…

  • The Story Behind X: Why did you start your brand? How has this journey been? What have you learned? What do you hope for in the future?

  • Trending: What is a current trend (pattern, style) and which products from your shop are in it.

  • Style Guide: How to wear multiple products together to get the look. How to use the product, like cool ways to tie a scarf, when best to use the miracle serum.

  • Sneak Peek: What’s coming up in the next few weeks? Share behind the scenes, snippets and hints to create interest and build momentum to the launch.

  • Friendly Email: A text (or mostly text) style email with tips, tricks, and cool finds like you are a friend reaching out with something new to share. Mingle your shop products with other brands, recipes, cool music and more with links.

Once you get started brainstorming ideas, new ways to place products in collections and a few fun design layouts, you will soon have too many emails to even make. This is such a good thing!

Remember to always write down those random ideas and save them for later. I put mine in the notes app on my phone. I guarantee they will help you out next time you get stuck thinking about what to post.
